One Day At A Time: A Netflix Original Series

Okay, so this review is part of a new “project” I’ve wanted to start for ages, a project that’s called Tv Series Reviews and it’s exactly what it sounds like. So basically, I’m going to be doing a little review on a series I love – or hate (wouldn’t that be fun!) – just like I’ve done this far with the books that I’m reading. So here we go!

For my first TV Series Review I’ve chosen a show I only just finished last night, a show that I absolutely adore: One Day At A Time. One Day At A Time is a Netflix Original Series and it currently has only one season *eyeing you, Netflix, don’t you dare cancel that one*. The series focuses on a Cuban-American family and their everyday life and struggles. The family consists of Penelope, an army veteran, her two kids, Elena and Alex, and Penelope’s mother, Lydia; and, occasionally, their neighbor, Schneider.

I can’t even begin to describe how much I love this series. First of all, it’s just a damn good sitcom. It’s light, it’s funny, it’s entertaining. It touches soooo many important issues without ever being preach-y; everything is handled with a delicacy and a sense of humour that really fits the story and its characters. It offers a unique perspective inside a Cuban family, a group that is not often represented in mainstream media. It is diverse, thoughtful, original, and funny. *potential spoilers* Elena even comes out as a lesbian half-way through the first season, officially making me love this series forever. A lesbian? A self-proclaimed feminist lesbian?? In a sitcom ??? Sign me the fuck up. *end of potential spoilers*

Honestly, I can’t even pick a favourite character. They are all so unique and so realistic, so well thought-out and three-dimensional, I feel like I actually know them in real life. Lydia was always a delight, and I kind of wished my grandma was more like her. Penelope is such a great mother and such a strong woman, I found myself hoping to be more like her. As for Elena? Where do I sign up to be her love interest next season? Honestly, this show just warms my heart and makes me so happy, I can’t believe I have to wait an entire year for a second season. Meanwhile, I’ll just re watch the first one and I encourage you all to do the same.
